Queenstown is New Zealand’s adventure capital and one of its top tourist destinations. Nestled amid the spectacular Southern Alps mountain range in the South Island region of Central Otago, it is home to the world’s first bungy jump – the 43 m high Kawarau Bridge – and the highest bungy jump in New Zealand – the 134 m high Nevis Bungy Jump. Jetboating on the Shotover and Dart Rivers, whitewater rafting, paragliding, skydiving, zip lining and mountain biking are among the many Queenstown tourist attractions on offer to thrill-seekers.

Three of New Zealand’s Great Walks are accessible from Queenstown, the Routeburn, Milford Track and Kepler. These are among the country’s most celebrated hiking routes, each offering beautiful scenery and awe-inspiring landscapes. The Routeburn Track is 32 km with a hiking time of two to four days, the Milford Track is 54 km with a hiking time of four days, and the Kepler Track is 60 km with a hiking time of three to four days.

Queenstown is also a great destination for skiers, boasting one of the longest seasons in the Southern Hemisphere – from around June to October – and a choice of four ski fields. Closest to town among these is Coronet Peak, 20 minutes’ drive away, while a 40-minute drive away is the Remarkables Ski Area. Cardrona is a 50-minute drive, and Treble Cone is 90 minutes’ drive.

For those who happen to be movie-buffs – The Lord of the Rings movie-buffs to be more precise – Queenstown is certainly a destination they will love. Many locations in and around Queenstown were used for filming in the legendary film trilogy, and a number of these can be visited.

Among the best things to do in Queenstown for tourists who love a great view, is to visit the Skyline Gondola, which rises 480 m up to the top of Bob’s Peak just a few minutes’ drive from town. Along with the views, there’s mountain biking and walking trails to enjoy, as well as luge tracks down the mountain.

Another must on the list of Queenstown tourist attractions is a trip on Lake Wakatipu aboard the century-old, restored coal-fired steamship TSS Earnslaw. This delightful 90-minute cruise sets off from the Queenstown lakefront and cruises the Remarkables mountain range and Cecil Peak, to Walter Peak High Country Farm. This can be done as a cruise only trip, or with time spent at Walter Peak for a tour and meal.

Queenstown, being located in the world’s southernmost wine region of Central Otago, means it’s a place for great wine, in particular pinot noir for which it is well known. A wonderful way to sample the area’s wines is on a wine tasting tour to some of the many local vineyards that dot the surrounding countryside.
