Queenstown Lakefront

Occupying a fantastic location on the shores of stunning Lake Wakatipu, within minutes of Queenstown’s shops, restaurants and charming pedestrian avenues, is an absolute jewel in cosy and modern hostel-style Queenstown lakefront accommodation – the aptly named Haka House Queenstown Lakefront.

The recently opened hostel aims to be a place guests can call home during their stay in Queenstown, with a welcoming and cosy atmosphere, great laid-back vibe, a choice of private and shared room accommodation, and facilities that include a fully equipped kitchen, dining and living area, movie room, pool table, outdoor terrace with BBQ and lake views, laundry and free WiFi. There’s also the added convenience of 24-hour guest access.

A prime choice in Queenstown lakefront accommodation, Haka House Queenstown Lakefront is an ideal base from which to explore what is one of New Zealand’s top tourist destinations – known for its many adventure and outdoor activities, and its stunning natural beauty. There’s bungy jumping at the 43 m Kawarau Bridge – the world’s first bungy jump – and the 134 m Nevis Bungy Jump – the country’s highest jump; jetboating on the Shotover and Dart Rivers, whitewater rafting, paragliding, skydiving, zip lining, mountain biking and more, for those seeking adrenaline-pumping thrills.

For those wanting a random taste of thrills during their visit – perhaps on a bungy jump – to those intent on creating full-on ‘Queenstown adventure packages’ for themselves, this world-famous destination has the goods. All of it easily reached from the choicest address in Queenstown lakefront accommodation – Haka House Queenstown Lakefront.

An iconic Queenstown experience that cannot be missed – literally or figuratively – is the Skyline Gondola, which rises 480 m up to the top of Bob’s Peak just a few minutes’ drive out of town. Along with the fantastic views on offer, there are mountain biking and walking trails to enjoy, as well as luge tracks down the mountain.

Visitors planning the next day’s adventure – perhaps from the comfort of their Queenstown lakefront accommodation – might like to include a journey aboard the century-old, lovingly restored coal-fired steamship TSS Earnslaw on Lake Wakatipu. Setting off from the Queenstown lakefront, this wonderful 90-minute cruise makes its way across the water past the Remarkables mountain range and Cecil Peak, to Walter Peak High Country Farm. This can be done as a cruise only, or with time spent at Walter Peak for a tour and meal.

The Remarkables served as the backdrop for many alpine settings such as Gondor and the Misty Mountains in The Lord of the Rings movies. In fact, The Lord of the Rings fans will be thrilled to know there are many locations around Queenstown which featured in the legendary film trilogy, many of which can be visited.

Wine aficionados, as well as those who just like a good drop, will be happy to know Queenstown is actually located in the world’s southernmost wine region, Central Otago, which is known for its mighty pinot noirs. A multitude of wineries surround Queenstown, many offering wine tasting and tours.

Skiing is another great choice to add to visitors’ ‘Queenstown adventure packages’. The destination offers one of the longest ski seasons in the Southern Hemisphere – from around June to October – and a choice of four ski fields. The closest of these to town is Coronet Peak, at just 20 minutes’ drive away and where the mountain terrain caters to all levels of skier and snowboarder. The Remarkables Ski Area is 40 minutes from town, Cardona is 50 minutes, and Treble Cone – the South Island’s largest ski area – is 90 minutes’ drive.
