Rotorua bike trails | mountain biking in Rotorua

Rotorua is New Zealand’s mountain biking mecca — and for good reason. With world-class trail networks, lush forests, and rider-friendly amenities, it’s a must-visit for both first-timers and seasoned riders. Whether you’re chasing fast descents or scenic loops, there’s a trail here with your name on it. And when the ride’s done, Haka House Rotorua is your home for hot showers, good banter, and a comfy bed.

The Whakarewarewa Forest Loop

For a longer adventure, the 35 km Forest Loop is an official Great Ride. It’s mostly gentle, perfect for riders who want to take their time and savour the views. You’ll skirt lakes, climb gentle hills, and coast through some of the best scenery in the region. Start and end at the Waipa MTB carpark, and reward yourself with a soak at the Secret Spot or the foot tubs and beverage combo once you’re done.  Grab a trail map at the Waipa hub and head out because the forest is calling.

Tangaroamihi & Te Kotukutuku

This section of the loop is a local favourite, starting at the Blue Lake Carpark. The Tangaroamihi trail eases you in before Te Kotukutuku treats you to a scenic descent alongside Green Lake. For a quick loop, head up Jeff’s Link and Tikitapu Service Road for a fun shortcut that still packs a punch.

Hot X Buns & Eagle vs Shark Combo

If you’re chasing adrenaline, this combo is hard to beat. Start from Forest Hub 2 on Tarawera Road, climb to the top of Hot X Buns, and launch into one of the most exciting descents around. After that, shuttle back up and take on Eagle vs Shark which is a downhill blast that’s earned a legendary status.

Skyline Rotorua

Not far from town, Skyline Rotorua is home to Crankworx and a mountain bike park with a gondola to carry you and your bike to the top. Each descent is crafted for flow and fun, with pro-level tracks and unbeatable lake views. Finish the day with a buffet at the top, and take in Rotorua from above.

City Ride via Sulphur Point

For a mellow roll through town, follow the Te Ara Ahi trail from Whakarewarewa Living Village to Sulphur Point. It’s an easy cruise past bubbling mud pools and geothermal wonders, ending at the Polynesian Spa or city centre. Grab lunch at Lime Café and roll back through Fenton Street to finish your ride.

Ride Year-Round

The best part? Rotorua MTB is a four-season affair. Volcanic soil keeps trails rideable even after rain, and every season brings its own magic from summer’s long days, to autumn’s crisp air, winter’s quiet rides, and spring’s bursts of green.
