Waitangi Treaty Grounds – Hangi and Concert

After a day of exploring the Waitangi Treaty Grounds at your leisure, your evening begins at Whare Waka Café. Mix and mingle as you enjoy an introduction by your charismatic and informative host, and a complimentary drink.

Soon after, you’ll witness the unveiling of the hāngi – a traditional Māori earth oven – in which your food is steamed to perfection. Our expert hāngi chefs will educate you on the cooking process as they tantalisingly reveal your feast.

But it’s not time to eat just yet – first you’ll journey back in time as your local guide accompanies you on a beguiling walk through the native bush. Experience the thrill of a challenge from a Māori warrior as you make your way through the grounds. If you pass, you’ll continue on to the iconic carved meeting house – Te Whare Rūnanga – where you’ll encounter a traditional Māori welcome, and an energetic cultural performance by our resident performing arts group – Te Pitowhenua.

After the show you’ll return to the café for a delicious, traditional hāngi dinner of meats, stuffing, vegetables, breads, salads and steamed pudding for dessert.

Available throughout the summer when the evenings are warm and inviting, this is your ultimate immersion into Māori culture, and an unmissable experience on your New Zealand itinerary.
